Term 3 - Mentone Mordialloc Art Group

It was the start of Term 3 at Mentone Mordialloc Art Group yesterday, and although the afternoon class has good numbers there are still 2 places available. The evening class numbers are way down, and there are 5 places available. Why not contact MMAG and join us? MMAG

I guess it is just cold and too miserable to make the trek into art class? But this term is all about fun and being creative with your drawings! Each week you will be given three mystery prompts to draw - draw one, draw them all - be realistic, be imaginative, just have fun. References will be your imagination (or if you wish you can google on your phone).

If you'd like to have a go the prompts yesterday were:
1. Draw three things that are always found in your handbag or backpack
2. Draw the favourite seasonal item of clothing that you wore this week (hat, gloves, shoes, etc)
3. Draw 3 things that made you smile today!

What made me smile? The kids on the playground through the windows... and my new fingerless gloves.

Mentone Mordialloc Art Group 'Drawing for fun' classes are each Thursday. Afternoon sessions 1.30pm to 3.30pm, Evening sessions 7.30pm to 9.30 pm. Held at the gallery/Mentone Hub, Venice Street, Mentone. Best time to contact the office is Friday mornings 10am to 12.30pm, or phone and leave a message on 0404033109. Include your phone number in your message and the co-ordinator will get back to you.

Camberwell art show

It's that time of year again, and the extravaganza of the Camberwell Art Show opens to the public from Saturday June 28th to Sunday 6th July 2025.

This is the shows' 60th year! The 60th Anniversary Gala Opening is at 6pm, Friday June 27 and will feature 10 demonstrating artists. Tickets online here →

Do try to make this show if you can, it promises to be a huge event in the Melbourne art scene. I will have 6 works on show, one of which is a favourite of mine, Equis Maris from the Bestiary series. Enjoy!

End of an Era

After 25 years, sadly, Tacit Art will be closing. This wonderfull gallery has supported my art for the past 10 years and I will miss them so much.

Tonight (Wednesday May 28) is the final Opening Event - if you can get along to farewell the lads please do so. Better yet, come during the final run of this Group Exhibition featuring some amazing artists, especially TJ Bateson (Tim). Come, see, buy if you can.

Pole and Line

It's been a few weeks - I have been busy! Doing lots of small format sculptures, playing around with oils, teaching, getting prepared for new term, gym, life, etc... But here is something hot of the desk!

I recently created a small format sculpture based around a Sirena tuna tin, and while it is 'okay', I knew I could do something better! So I recreated the concept in graphite on paper. And I am far more pleased with the result.
I only every buy Sirena tuna now - it is sustainably fished in Australian waters with pole and line. An all Australian company - not to mention being delicious.

Mech'shrooms

I asked my classes to create a drawing of fungi in an imaginative or fantastical way - to go past reality into another world. Here is my demonstration piece:
