VAS Maritime Exhibition

 Ships, boats, water and whales!

Now on, the Victorian Artist Society's annual Maritime Exhibition opened last night. Some beautiful images of ships, boats and ocean related themes - well stopping in to the gallery for a look. The exhibition runs until May 3. INFO

Julian Bruere was the overall winner with his fabulous work 'Le Vengeur sinks, 1794'. Julian is a master in the art of painting ships and famous naval battles, and this work shows his mastery. You can read Julian's bio and see a screen version of the work HERE. But really, a screen shot doesn't do this work justice, you need to stand in front of it and contemplate it to take in all the drama and detail.

And it was with great delight that I also received a Highly Commended award for my drawing 'Moby'. VAS exhibitions are judged to a very high standard and it is a real honor to have been awarded this prize by the well known artist and judge, Craig Penny. Thank you Craig!

Kilmore Art Expo 2021

Yesterday I had an enjoyable afternoon viewing and judging the works at the 2021 Kilmore Art Expo. What a great show! I cannot tell you the winners, those will be announced tonight at the Preview event. But I must say that the overall standard of works is very high, especially among the Sculpture category. The show runs all this weekend, so if you are thinking of taking a drive out to the country, I highly recommend you visit the Kilmore Art Expo, located in the Memorial Hall, 14 Sydney Street, Kilmore.

Plus, I have a few of my Spoons on show!

New Publication

Many of you may have already purchased a copy of my book by Walter Foster, 'Drawing Lifelike Animals'. It has been in publication now for over 10 years and has been very popular. But perhaps you want more than just animals? Last month Walter Foster launched a reprint collection which incorporates my book into a larger quarto sized volume with three other artists (144pages). Titled 'Drawing Lifelike Subjects' in covers a range of subjects including flowers, landscapes and animals.

"Step-by-Step Studio: Drawing Lifelike Subjects teaches beginning artists how to create realistic, detailed drawings in graphite pencil. Featuring in-depth instruction on basic drawing techniques, creating texture, developing likeness, and more, Step-by-Step Studio: Drawing Lifelike Subjects is the perfect guide for you as a beginning or intermediate artist. After an introduction to basic materials and pencil techniques, four accomplished artists offer insight, tips, and step-by-step demonstrations that help create detailed, lifelike drawings of your chosen subjects, including animals, flowers, and landscapes. Learn to create texture and likeness using basic pencil techniques, understanding perspective, exploring light and shadow, developing values, and more." Quoted from Booktopia

My book is included in the last 1/4 of the volume

Available from Amazon or Booktopia - and no doubt other online sources it could be a great addition to your drawing bookshelf! For those of you in my classes I will bring along my author's copy for you to have a look at. WF has included almost all of the material from my 'Lifelike Animals' as well as the other three artist's books. A great selection bundled into one book!

But note, I still have copies of the original 64 page book,  'Drawing Lifelike Animals' available if you would to purchase that book alone. Signed copies are available from my website HERE

A Lovely Surprize

This morning I went to have a look at the Blairgowrie Yacht Club Art show and was delighted to walk in to see my work 'Eyrie' hung at the entrance with a Best In Show award! I hope some of you had the chance to see the show, it was excellent with some very interesting and beautiful pieces.

The Best in Show prize was sponsored by Fitzpatrick & Co Insurance Brokers, and I thank them for their support. The show judge was Lisa Byrne, and I am honored to have one of my art works judged so highly by her.  What a fantastic way to end the long weekend!
